A Magical Rain-Cleared Elopement at Ironwoods Beach

February 6, 2026

This intimate beach elopement at Ironwoods Beach was the kind of wedding day that reminds you why Maui is such a special place to get married.

I had the honor of coordinating this beautiful celebration on behalf of Simple Maui Weddings, supporting the couple through a calm, seamless, and deeply personal ceremony experience.

Despite a rainy start to the day, the weather shifted just in time — creating soft skies, dramatic ocean color, and one of the most magical ceremony backdrops you could imagine.

Ironwoods Beach in Kapalua, Maui, a popular location for elopements and intimate beach weddings.

Where Is Ironwoods Beach in Maui?

Ironwoods Beach is located on the west side of Maui, near the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua and tucked behind the Kapalua Golf Course.

Known for its dramatic coastal cliffs, powerful ocean views, and natural, untouched feel, Ironwoods is one of Maui’s most breathtaking — and often underrated — elopement locations.

The cliffs surrounding the beach are home to hundreds of shearwater birds, which adds to the wild, sacred feeling of the coastline and inspired the heart behind Shearwater Weddings.

Getting Ready for an Intimate Maui Beach Elopement

The bride wore a stunning Maggie Sottero gown from The Bridal Collection in Colorado, pairing timeless elegance with effortless beach movement.

The groom chose a classic Kenneth Cole suit from Men’s Warehouse, creating a clean, modern look that complemented the natural tones of the beach and cliffs.

One of the sweetest moments?
The couple had actually walked down the same beach path the morning of their wedding — not realizing it was where they would say their vows later that day.

A Ceremony Rooted in Romance and Hawaiian Culture

The ceremony was led by Peter Dagupion, who guided the couple through a deeply romantic and meaningful experience that blended Hawaiian cultural elements with a personalized blessing chosen by the couple.

Peter has a calming presence that allows couples to feel grounded and present, which is especially powerful during intimate elopements. During the ceremony, he honored the spirit of place — something that feels especially important at Ironwoods Beach, where land, ocean, and wildlife all meet in such a dramatic way.

The combination of Hawaiian tradition and the couple’s personal intentions created a ceremony that felt both sacred and uniquely theirs.

Capturing the Beauty of Ironwoods Beach

Photographer, Samantha Dahabi, is incredibly skilled at working at Ironwoods Beach, especially when it comes to navigating the cliffs, lighting shifts, and ocean movement.

She worked closely with the couple to bring their vision to life. Samantha helped guide them to the best locations along the cliffs and shoreline while making sure they felt comfortable and natural in front of the camera.

Ironwoods is known for dramatic drop-offs, textured lava rock, and constantly changing light, and having a photographer who understands how to safely and beautifully use the space makes all the difference in creating breathtaking images.

Bright, Coastal-Inspired Florals

Florals were designed and created by Dellables Floral Artistry, whose team crafted a vibrant, romantic bouquet for the bride along with a matching boutonniere for the groom.

The florals added a beautiful pop of color against the neutral tones of the cliffs and sand while still feeling organic to the natural Maui landscape.

For beach elopements, florals often act as the primary design element, and this bouquet elevated the overall look while still keeping the effortless, intimate feel of the day.

When Rain Turns Into Magic on Your Wedding Day

Rain is always a possibility in Hawaii, but it often brings something special with it.

  • Cooler, comfortable air

  • Soft, romantic lighting

  • Dramatic ocean texture

  • Fewer beach crowds

By ceremony time, the sky opened just enough to create a truly cinematic Maui wedding setting.

Whales, Cliffs, and Once-in-a-Lifetime Ceremony Moments

Before, during, and after the ceremony, multiple whales breached just offshore.

It created one of those rare, fully present moments where everyone paused to take in what was happening — ocean, wildlife, love, and celebration all happening at once.

Experiences like this are what make Maui elopements feel so deeply personal and unforgettable.

Celebrating With an Oceanfront Dinner at Merriman’s

After the ceremony, the couple celebrated their marriage with an intimate reception dinner at Merriman's Kapalua, located just minutes from Ironwoods Beach.

Merriman’s is known for its fine dining experience, locally sourced ingredients, and one of the most breathtaking cliffside ocean views on West Maui.

It was the perfect way for the couple to transition from ceremony to celebration — enjoying incredible food, ocean views, and time together soaking in the magnitude of the day.

For couples planning an intimate Maui elopement, pairing a beach ceremony with a private dinner reception is one of the most meaningful ways to celebrate.
